Hello. Thanks for reading.
What does “une petite peu” mean?
I started blogging at un(e) petit(e) peu in 2008, but these words have been uttered by beginner French-learners since time immemorial. Une petite peu is incorrect French for “a little bit.” The correct way of saying it is: un petit peu. The difference is in the gender. In French, the indefinite article “une” is feminine whereas “un” is masculine. The suffix “-e” is usually added to an adjective describing a feminine noun. These gender assignments are arbitrary. When I first started learning French, assigning gender to nouns didn’t come naturally. I found feminine cigarettes and masculine fingers awkward and unintuitive. The lack of choice in the matter always bothered me.
“Une petite peu” is incorrectly feminine, but I like to think that’s okay.
